Cow’s milk has two major proteins (whey and casein), but about 80 percent is casein, which can be categorized further into A1 beta-casein and A2 beta-casein. A1 beta-casein is broken down into a compound called beta-casomorphin-7, or BCM-7, which has been associated with gastrointestinal inflammation, uncomfortable digestive symptoms, eczema, acne, and cognitive impairment in some people. On the other hand, A2 beta-casein has not been shown to cause any of these ill effects. Goat’s milk naturally contains only A2 beta-casein.
